And if we are a focused"]},{"start":534.73,"end":538.929,"text":["learning school, then we have to be able to examine every"]},{"start":538.929,"end":544.82,"text":["single practice, policy, program, and procedure with the question:"]},{"start":545.159,"end":547.95,"text":["Is this helping more kids learn at high level?"]},{"start":547.95,"end":551.19,"text":["The second big idea is: are we gonna create a collaborative culture?"]},{"start":551.19,"end":553.46,"text":["We know that there's no way that we can"]},{"start":553.46,"end":556.22,"text":["help all kids learn at high levels if we don't work together,"]},{"start":556.84,"end":559.57,"text":["so we're gonna create a collaborative culture and we're gonna"]},{"start":559.57,"end":563.309,"text":["take collective responsibility for every single child. And I'm gonna turn it over to Jackie."]},{"start":1298.839,"end":1302.359,"text":["So when we introduced the"]},{"start":1302.359,"end":1304.93,"text":["idea of learning domains in that first chart,"]},{"start":1305.99,"end":1309.89,"text":["there was physical, cognitive, social-emotional, but the one that"]},{"start":1309.89,"end":1310.39,"text":["we haven't really addressed yet is language,"]},{"start":1310.39,"end":1313.94,"text":["and especially in the early childhood years, developing"]},{"start":1313.94,"end":1315.799,"text":["their language is critical."]},{"start":1315.809,"end":1317.74,"text":["And this is one way if you're going to try"]},{"start":1317.74,"end":1320.42,"text":["and integrate the curriculum, if you work on their language"]},{"start":1320.42,"end":1323.64,"text":["development, it's going to improve all those other domains."]},{"start":1323.64,"end":1326.69,"text":["So you might have noticed if you did virtual"]},{"start":1326.69,"end":1329.93,"text":["learning in the spring that having good teacher wait time"]},{"start":1329.93,"end":1330.91,"text":["in a virtual setting,"]},{"start":1330.92,"end":1332.809,"text":["it's a lot harder than it is in person, isn't it?"]},{"start":1332.809,"end":1335.25,"text":["That dead air space is really painful."]},{"start":1335.25,"end":1337.569,"text":["So one of the things you might consider doing is"]},{"start":1337.579,"end":1342.799,"text":["teaching these academic conversation skills, even to our youngest learners,"]},{"start":1342.829,"end":1344.4,"text":["at the beginning of this school year."]},{"start":1344.559,"end":1346.44,"text":["So the 4 of us were colleagues at Mason Crest Elementary"]},{"start":1346.44,"end":1347.579,"text":["in Annandale and"]},{"start":1347.579,"end":1349.819,"text":["this is something that we started doing several years ago"]},{"start":1349.819,"end":1352.17,"text":["when we were doing in person instruction, and I can't"]},{"start":1352.17,"end":1354.79,"text":["tell you how exciting it is to walk into a"]},{"start":1354.79,"end":1358.329,"text":["kindergarten classroom by November and hear them saying, \"I'd like"]},{"start":1358.329,"end":1361.559,"text":["to piggyback on top of what Jose said,\" because"]},{"start":1361.559,"end":1364.43,"text":["they really do internalize these and it helps them express"]},{"start":1364.43,"end":1367.109,"text":["their thoughts in a much more clear way and show"]},{"start":1367.109,"end":1368.29,"text":["higher order thinking."]},{"start":1368.29,"end":1371.9,"text":["So these ideas come from a book called Academic Conversations"]},{"start":1371.9,"end":1374.45,"text":["and it shows that there are 5 core conversation skills"]},{"start":1374.45,"end":1377.18,"text":["that everyone needs, and you see in this chart they"]},{"start":1377.18,"end":1380.69,"text":["are bulleted kind of in ascending order of difficulty."]},{"start":1380.69,"end":1382.849,"text":["So the first one you might try to teach is"]},{"start":1382.849,"end":1384.72,"text":["how to elaborate and clarify,"]},{"start":1384.72,"end":1386.79,"text":["so we teach kids to stretch out"]},{"start":1386.79,"end":1388.46,"text":["what they're saying using this motion. The next one"]},{"start":1388.46,"end":1391.47,"text":["is how to support ideas with examples. And it goes on."]},{"start":1391.89,"end":1395.529,"text":["And the procedure that we use is you first want"]},{"start":1395.529,"end":1398.16,"text":["to actually tell them what its called, \"We're gonna teach"]},{"start":1398.16,"end":1399.71,"text":["you to elaborate.\" Four year olds,"]},{"start":1399.71,"end":1403.339,"text":["5 year olds can understand that. And then practice it"]},{"start":1403.349,"end":1405.309,"text":["with the cognitive load dialed down,"]},{"start":1405.309,"end":1408.65,"text":["so that means not with new content, but maybe in"]},{"start":1408.65,"end":1409.549,"text":["a social setting."]},{"start":1409.549,"end":1413.29,"text":["So you tell them something like, \"Brownies are the best dessert."]},{"start":1413.74,"end":1416.529,"text":["Can you elaborate on that idea?\" and give them a"]},{"start":1416.529,"end":1418.42,"text":["chance to practice.
