It may have seemed like the obvious choice growing up, that I was just going to fall into my father's profession and become part of what we have today. But that really wasn't my plan all along. When I was 21, I graduated college and began my career as an auditor. At that time, I was excited, but I learned that it wasn't for me.\n\nI was working 80 hours a week for way too long. And I finally said to myself, \"This is a lot, and I'm not really excited about going to work the next day.\" And that was probably the biggest driver for me, was being able to obtain that work like balance, because I saw my father had it. So, we were sitting around at the dinner table and I just flat out asked him, I said, \"Would you consider hiring me?\"\n\nAnd of course my dad didn't come out and say, \"Yes.\" He said, \"Well... why?\"\n\nTOM: The burning question for me was: Is he going to come into the firm?\n\nPAUL: To take that leap out of my comfort zone was definitely the biggest thing for me. And I'm sure my father was considering that as well knowing the experience that I had didn't necessarily coincide with some of the things we do here on a day to day basis.\n\nTOM: I think he had some navigation issues early in the going of it because he wasn't sure about the business, he wasn't sure about the individual practice, he wasn't sure about the clients, he was trying to adjust from going to big Corporate America happy hour on Friday night in Hartford, to sleepy little North Haven office with three people in the office.\n\nPAUL: Just the unknown of all of that I think was the biggest challenge,\n\nand what my biggest fear was: that I was going to make the wrong decision. And my father really came into play and taught me how to do it. He has experience that I'll never have because he's been doing it for 20 years longer than I have.\n\nTOM: It was no longer where I wanted the firm to go, it was where we wanted to bring the firm. It was no longer let's do it this way; let's do it our way. He the earned the right to be a successor, and to buy–key word–into the firm and he's gonna pay me.\n\nPAUL: We really engaged FP Transitions to make sure that we had addressed all of the different scenarios, and then honed in on the one that we felt was most appropriate for our business, our clients, and our families. The biggest transition you're able to see is, my father was here less. Time is money, and sometimes time is much more valuable, and as you get older you have less of it. And now my father is spending more time out of the office, he's with my mother, they're traveling.\n\nand they're doing all the things they didn't get to do while he was by himself.\n\nTOM: Individually, we're who we are, but together I think we're more powerful.\n\nAnd it has been such a rewarding process: bringing him to the firm, and seeing how he's progressed as a professional.\n\nPAUL: Our clients definitely feel a sense of relief when we talk about how if something happens to them 20 years down the road and my dad's not here, that there's someone that not just is family, but also that knows them, and knows their family, and can relate to them.
